Welcome to the mess that is Thine Appellation! Let me talk about it for a bit.
Thine Appellation is a comic (originally a TV show idea) about a group of friends just going about their business in a rural town called Alpenglow, often getting embroiled in situations of a comedic or just downright weird nature. Like some kind of sit-com or something.. At least, that's the summary about the strip now. At first, it was about the same group of friends going about their business, but instead they were police detectives. Hi-jinks ensue, no doubt.
Police based stories are the basis for the first 100 or so comics in the archives, and while still having some jokes in there I don't mind (don't start me on the art), they have a weird, uncomfortable feeling to them. A story about a possible bomb threat is meant to be funny? Hmm. There's little universal humour to be had from police based story. That's why there's more police dramas than comedy, and any comedy there is is something saft, like the Thin Blue Line or Operation Good Guys. Bleh, those two suck.
It took a while for me to realise, but the nature of it was stifling to me, ideas wise. I wanted to do weirder things with the storylines, but their jobs prevented me from doing that. So, I issued the cast with p45's and ended their careers.. Simple as. This isn't ruining any plot, by the way. Because there wasn't any. Now I am free and do whatever I please, meaning I can go to town with the surrealness of it all. Now I can give them crazy jobs all over the place! Or adventures! Or infections! Hee hee!
So if you decide to read the archives, I suggest you start from this strip, as this is just after the policey (new word!) parts and the start of what some could call chapter 2, subtitled "Better than Chapter 1". If you enjoy those and end up wishing to stay with this thrice weekly strip, this is mostly the kind of stuff I'll be doing; storylines that start out seeming sensible and degrade into nonesense, hopefully each one having a decent conclusion to it (after all, a story IS a beginning, middle and end).
If you're feeling bored or suicidal, then maybe try to attempt reading the archives from the beginning. The Fancy Archives page will give you a brief synopsis of each story, holding your hand throughout the obviously terrifying ordeal of the previous strips. I always enjoyed the first five strips, where the characters are in the pub (meant to be a casual introduction to the fine fellows), but started to get that uncomfortable feeling when it went back to police business. I should have guessed early on, really.
(did I mention there were forty four other strips before the first one that were deleted because I hated them? Ah good. It's for the best.)
To sum up, Thine Appellation is story based (insofar a story as a vehicle for jokes and weirdness), not serious or political and easy going on the guilt trips. Think of it in episodes, because that's what they were. Until Channel 4 turned them down after some correspondence.
Them. They. Those guys. The characters. I've hinted to, but not talked about those brave souls who make the main cast of this comic. Instead of making a seperate cast page, I've incorporated it all into one, as to make your first tentative toe dip into the thine appellation world easier and not as scary. Other characters may yet jump into the fray, but for now these are the main players:

Priqué is a cocky fellow, who sometimes doesn't grasp
the severity or gravitas of a given situation. Is more concerned with
the make of the gun rather than the fact that the gun is pointed at his
head. Prone to pointing out grammtical inconsistencies, often leading
to the aforementioned gun being pointed at his head. Was tested for ADD,
but couldn't sit still long enough to finish the exam. Taflyn is a childhood
friend of his. Managed to become a detective through mysterious means,
although some suspect they're rather boring.. |

Taflyn is a mild-mannered girl with a quick wit and tendency to be very literal with her phrasing and taking things said to her literally, giving solid evidence to why she and Priqué have been friends since childhood. Priqué and Taflyns conversations often descend into gibberish no-one else can understand. Pretended to shave her hair off for a bet, instead wearing a bathing cap for a week. Has a brother, who alone has the power to make her furious just by existing. She quit the job he gave her and became a cop instead, until recently. Doesn't understand "girl power". |

Drake is a former marathon runner, who decided to become an officer of the law after catching a thief while running an endurance race (he finished 3rd). During his time as an cop, he met and became friends with Priqué and Taflyn, whom both enjoying toying with Drakes' inability to grasp sarcasm, puns or any other type of literary technique. Not dumb, but not exactly sharp either. An honest soul who would chase you down to hand you back the 20p you dropped on the floor. Has a scar on his nose, which he doesn't like to talk about. |
